Your Ultimate Guide to Edinburgh, Scotland (on film)
Scotland has a charm that’s hard to resist—rugged landscapes, historic castles, and a culture rich in tradition. If you’re planning a trip to this beautiful country, Edinburgh should be at the top of your list! My husband and I chose to celebrate our 9 year anniversary here and do a little research so you don’t have to. We had the best time soaking in all the rich history, amazing views, and incredible food. This city is the perfect mix of old-world charm and modern flair, making it an ideal destination for couples looking for adventure, romance, or even a place to tie the knot.
Why Edinburgh?
Edinburgh is a city that’s incredibly easy to navigate, making it a stress-free destination for travelers. From the moment you land at the airport, you can hop on a tram that arrives every 7 minutes and takes you directly into the heart of Edinburgh. Everything from there is walkable, so you won’t need to worry about transportation once you’re settled (unless of course you want to explore the beautiful Highlands, then you’ll need a car or to book a tour). Honestly, if you aren’t walking this city you are doing yourself quite the disservice. You will miss so much. Walking is the best way to explore and discover all the things. Plus, you’ll get all your steps in!
Where to Stay:
My top recommendation is to stay in New Town instead of Old Town. New Town offers a more upscale, classy vibe with quiet, posh streets that make it the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring. Plus, the price difference between New Town and Old Town isn’t significant, so you can enjoy a bit of luxury without breaking the bank.
Accommodations Tip:
Consider staying in a hotel rather than an Airbnb or VRBO. Edinburgh, like many cities, is facing a housing shortage, and locals need available housing. Staying in a hotel helps support the local economy and the locals while ensuring you have a comfortable, hassle-free stay. They’re requiring Airbnbs and short term lets to be licensed. I didn’t know this until after I booked our stay unfortunately.
Safety First:
Edinburgh is one of those rare cities where I felt completely safe walking around at any hour. Whether you’re exploring the historic sites or just enjoying a leisurely stroll, the city’s welcoming atmosphere is always present.
Scotland’s Free Roam Law:
Scotland has a unique law called the “Right to Roam,” which allows you to freely explore public property. This means you can wander through the countryside, take in the breathtaking views, and find the perfect spot for a romantic picnic or place to pop up a tent without any restrictions. If you’re adventurous and want to meander up to the Highlands, this is a great option.
